Basin Analysis

BASIN ANALYSIS

BASIN ANALYSIS is understanding how sedimentary basins form, subside, fill, and preserve Earth’s history.

What Students Will Learn

How basins form (rift, passive margin, foreland, strike-slip).

How tectonics, climate & sea-level control sedimentation.

How facies migrate (Walther’s Law) and record environment shifts.

How sea-level rise/fall creates key stratigraphic surfaces
– Sequence Boundaries, Flooding Surfaces, Maximum Flooding Surfaces.

How sedimentary layers stack (prograding, retrograding, aggrading).

How parasequences & systems tracts build a depositional sequence.

Why It Matters

Predict reservoir–seal–source rock distribution.

Understand basin evolution and stratigraphic architecture.

Apply sequence stratigraphy to wells, seismic & field data.
