This course provides an integrated understanding of sedimentary basin formation, evolution, and basin-fill architecture within the context of plate tectonics and sedimentary processes. This course stress on basin classification, structural styles, tectonic settings, subsidence mechanisms and the evolution of major basin types including rift, passive margin, strike-slip, and foreland basins.
Students will evaluate the controls of sedimentation, accommodation space, relative sea-level change, and sequence stratigraphy in interpreting sedimentary successions and basin evolution. The course also introduces basin subsidence analysis, geohistory reconstruction, and subsurface interpretation techniques widely applied in petroleum geoscience and basin evaluation studies.
Through lectures, case studies, paper reviews, and technical presentations, students will develop analytical, interpretation, and scientific communication skills relevant to hydrocarbon exploration and regional geological analysis.
